In Delhi McDonald’s Is Shutting Almost 80 Percent Of Their Outlets And Here’s Why
We’ve almost come to expect to see a McDonald’s at every corner (I almost died when I moved and discovered McDonald’s didn’t deliver here #firstworldproblems). However in Delhi McDonald’s is definitely not going to be as accessible as it once was. This is because 43 of their 55 outlets are going to be temporarily closed from today onwards.
If you had plans of hitting up a McD today then you may have been sorely disappointed. However, not as disappointed as the over 1,700 workers who could be out of work but perhaps not out of a job (in Delhi McDonald’s said they would be paid till operations resumed).
Vikram Bakshi ex MD of CPRL said, “It’s unfortunate, but operation of 43 restaurants operated by CPRL has been temporarily suspended.”
It seems as though the reason for the temporary suspension due to a disagreement between Connaught Plaza Restaurants Ltd (CPRL), and McDonald’s, who are involved in a 50-50 joint venture. Economic Times reported it was rumoured that CPRL has failed to get the mandatory regulatory health licences renewed because of the infighting between Bakshi and McDonald’s.
In fact, Bakshi has been involved in a drawn-out legal fight with McDonald’s taking them to the Company Law Board (CLB), which is yet to announce its verdict. On the other hand, McDonald’s has also been pursuing arbitration against Bakshi in the London Court of International Arbitration.
Whatever the case may be, the fact remains that this isn’t doing any favours for either CPRL or McDonald’s brand image. As for the poor Delhites craving McDonald’s, I guess they’ll have to get their fix elsewhere for now.
