Delhi Spends Most On Fast Food & Dining Out, Says Report

Ditching the kitchen for something fancier – say outside of your home’s premise – is clearly the go-to choice for a chunk of today’s metropolitan population. Even Tier II & Tier III cities are catching up fast. But a new infographic by The Times Of India paints a clear picture of which city spends how much for what kind of food.

Reportedly, the Capital shells out the most on fast food chains, cafes and street food stalls while Mumbai shows a preference for restaurants, both standalone and inside hotels. Now we can guess why Delhi’s youth ranks highest on the obesity scale!

Leading The Way

The reports clearly shows that Delhi leads the way when it comes to spending on fast food chains, the unorganized and organized segments, and all other dine-out formats ranging from quick service restaurants (QSRs) such as KFC, McDonald’s and Subway, to casual dine restaurants (CDRs) like Pizza Hut and Barbeque Nation and fine dining chains.

Looking at the overall numbers, Delhi is followed closely by Mumbai with Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai trailing behind. The per capita expenditure on food services by India’s urban population is still less than one-tenth of the United States and less than one-seventh of that in China.

Currently, the Indian food market is worth INR 3,09,110 crore (~ USD 463 billion) in all and is expected to reach INR 4,98,130 crore (~ USD 746 billion) by 2021. While share of restaurants (organized) and chains such as Domino’s, Cafe Coffee Day, McDonald’s and Barbeque Nation will go up over the next five years, the share of the unorganised sector will decline, reports TOI.
