From Dough To Your Plate: It’s All About the Flying Roti When it Comes To Barottas
Whether you’ve known it as a parotta or a barotta, it is one of the most popular bread items in the south of India. For those that didn’t know, a barotta is also known as “the flying roti”, because it is made by flipping it in the air, much like a pizza base. But the difference is that a barotta is soft and comes plain, but is to be eaten with curries and gravies of any and all kinds. Made from flour, this is a famous roti from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. And now, Chennai has her very own company that makes and sells barottas in all shapes and sizes, in set combos and combinations of your choice.
Started earlier this year, Barottas is a food delivery startup in the heart of Chennai. They provide you with freshly made barottas and vegetarian and non-vegetarian combinations from all over the country. If you love food and if you love exploring the new cuisines and flavours our country has to offer, Barottas is where you need to be. And before you think that it’s just a regular food service company that makes and sends you food, it’s important to know that parottas being the speciality and focus of a meal has never been done before. Whether you’re looking for a breakfast combo or lunch, dinner or even a dessert, Barottas has it.
And we haven’t even talked about the best part yet – you can make your own combinations. Using their website or their app, you can choose the box you wish and then pick the contents that go into each box and pay accordingly. This way, you get to choose what you eat every single time. They claim it’s the first time this kind of online experience has been introduced in India, and they may not be wrong. They’ve got over 500 different varieties of barottas ranging from Madurai to Malaysia to choose from and every single one of them is tasty, different, healthy and nutritious.
We recently ordered a selection of Barottas combos and other food items to the HungryForever office in order to get a better understanding of what they have to offer and we were satisfied by the end of the meal. Here’s a look at what we got.
Barotta Box
This is the big one and we’re starting with it, because it’s important to know that one of these boxes will satisfy the hunger cravings of an army. Sort of. A Barotta Box comes with two starters, a soup or curry, two main courses, a drink and dessert. Our Barotta Box came with Chilli Milli Chicken (as a starter), a Mutton Varutha Curry (as gravy), a portion of Mutton Biryani, Mutton Chukka and Chicken Stuffed Roti Canai. Plus, some ginger sweets and a bottle of tender coconut water. It looks like a pizza box, feeds more than a pizza would and will leave you absolutely satisfied.
My Box
This is fairly simple and easy to understand. Each box comes with a main course and a curry, plus fresh vegetables, a portion of raita and some non-vegetarian salna. Our My Box came with Madurai Bun Barotta, which is such an interesting concept because it’s thick like a bun, but still soft like a Barotta. Along with it, we got a Southern Chicken Curry and a Cucumber Onion Salad. Talk about a complete meal!
Stuffed Rotis
Stuffed parottas are nothing new, but these are definitely something else. We got one box of the Chicken Stuffed Roti Canai, which is a Malaysian preparation and Creamy Garlic Chicken Roti Canai.
Dessert Barotta
They’ve also got this amazing new addition which is dessert barottas, which just means that it’s a barotta stuffed with the sweet things your dreams are made of. Like a Chocolate Barotta, which has Kit Kat melted and stuffed inside a barotta. Or the Strawberry Barotta which has strawberries cut and stuffed inside, along with a strawberry puree that will set your taste buds alight!
And to close, here’s all the amazing food we feasted on, leaving the HungryForever office completely satisfied and ready to place another order for another rainy day.
You can order their food online via their website or using their app, which is available for iOS and Android.
