Impossible Foods’ Uses Soy Heme For The Burger’s Meatiness

on

Impossible Foods’ have invented a burger that uses all natural ingredients to compensate for a meat patty. They use wheat, coconut oil, and potatoes as well as an ingredient called heme due to which they have not been given an FDA approval. Heme is a naturally occurring protein that is found in great quantities in meat but there is also some in plants like soy bean and is known as soy leghemoglobin.

This protein on breaking down gives meat a certain texture and brings out the flavour which all carnivores are familiar with. Now since this company only wants to use natural ingredients and not actual meat, they use soy heme to make their burgers. The FDA has concerns for this substance and they say that, “it has never been consumed by humans and may be an allergen” in documents that were obtained by Times. Though not approved by FDA, these burgers are growing in popularity and are sold in restaurants like Momofuku Nishi, Cockscomb, Umami Burger and Hopdoddy.

Even though Impossible Foods’ themselves have tested the compound extensively they have re-applied for FDA approval. Rachel Konrad a spokesperson for Impossible Foods’ said, “We respect the role the F.D.A. plays in ensuring the safety of our food supply, and we believe the public wants and deserves transparency and access to any information they need to decide for themselves whether any food they might eat is safe and wholesome.”
