The Indian Diet May Be Inefficient For Humans, Says Indian Dietician Association

The Indian diet complete with all the spices, oils, curries, meats, and desi ghee is touted as one of the richest diets globally. And while it boasts of elements that benefit our health, experts at the Indian Dietician Association (IDA) argue otherwise, saying that the Indian diet has 50 % inadequate protein pattern.

But it’s not just the IDA that has highlighted the ill effects of an Indian diet; the Protein Foods Nutrition Development Association of India (PFNDAI) too is in agreement. Nutritionists say that the Indian diet – especially vegetarian food –lacks sufficient amount of proteins, making it necessary for people to rely on alternate sources for their protein requirement.

Moreover, the issue is a matter of concern especially for pregnant women as they would not be able to achieve optimal protein intake with exclusively vegetarian diets until they add milk to the diet.

 

The Protein Week

Speaking at the launch of The Protein Week, pathologist said B. Sesikeran said: “Proteins from different sources complement each other. Even with a ratio of 5:1 cereals and pulses combination, the protein quality in terms of digestibility and bio-availability is only around 65 per cent when compared to milk protein”.

The Protein Week is an initiative that aims at enlightening people about the importance of proteins and various myths surrounding the food. Under this initiative, the IDA and PFNDAI seek to host informative sessions that will engage key opinion leaders from all across India to spread awareness and discuss the protein-related issues in the country.
