Narcos or Nachos? Food Fraud Better Than Drugs For Money Making
Move over illicit substances because it turns out, food fraud is the real money maker. Apparently, an estimated 47 billion Euros worth of food fraud takes place yearly worldwide! That’s heaps more than the heroin trade which racks in around 27 billion Euros and the sale illegal firearms which pulls around 7.6 billion Euros.
The NFCU defines food fraud as a dishonest act or omission, relating to the production or supply of food, which is intended for personal gain or to cause loss to another party.
Here in India, what comes to mind is the adding of rocks in dal in order to increase the weight as well as the rumours of plastic rice that have been circulating in Maharastra and Karnataka. However, it’s not only limited to this, food fraud also pertains to the false labelling of products, passing one food off for another.
