The Popularity of Food Delivery Services

on

You know what’s all the rage these days? Home delivery services. You’ve got your Swiggy’s and DineIns and FoodPandas and so much more. Life has never been this easy before and it’s only going to get more and easier when drones are introduced into the rest of the world to deliver your food. No matter where you are, if you have an app on your phone, then everything can be delivered to your door instantly.

Food delivery isn’t a new feature, but the fact that companies are now created for the sole purpose of delivering food is what makes this industry a growing concept. In the past, you could just call Domino’s or Pizza Hut, place your long and complicated order and they’d deliver your food within the hour. Then they upgraded to you placing your orders online, but going through a much easier method. And now, you can just press a button and your food shows up. It’s almost like magic.

Why is it popular?

Why wouldn’t it be popular, I ask.  You can sit in the comfort of your home, in your pyjamas and not have to worry about looking presentable in order to eat food. In the past, most restaurants had take-away services where you called and ordered your food and then they called you back once everything was ready and you had to go pick it up. Now, you order your food and they bring it straight to you.

 Let’s count the ways…

  • You can be having the best or the worst day, and all you’ll really have to do is press a button on your phone and place the order.
  • You don’t have to look presentable or even have to brush your teeth for this
  • All you need is your phone and the internet
  • This is perfect for when you forget that you’ve invited your friends over and need to feed them all

The list of reasons why home delivery services are popular could go on for pages and pages, but the point is that it’s an easy way to eat what you want, when you want to.

But now, it’s not just about ordering pizzas, you can order almost anything, from anywhere. The services usually cover the entire city that you’re in so if you’re living in the heart of the city, but you want a specific dish from a restaurant an hour or so away, you don’t have to break your head trying to think of ways to make that happen.

And, as we have said a million times already, all you have to do is download the app and the rest will follow.

Personally…..

I have a love/hate relationship with this process.

I do love that it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, but I also hate that there is no human contact. Maybe it makes me sound old, but the days of actually speaking to someone made everything seem more personal. Sure, speaking to someone who doesn’t understand what you’re saying can always send you into a rage spiral and that ends badly for everyone, but you’re still talking to someone to get the food that you want. In a strange way, that adds a human touch and nobody ever complained about that.

I do love that I can be anywhere placing the order and get home just as my food arrives, taking the weight and pressure of having to cook off my shoulders. I also hate that sometimes the food won’t be hot when it arrives, requiring me to heat it up myself. But I do love that I can get my favourite food from my favourite restaurants without having to get dressed up and deal with traffic. But I do hate that because of the traffic, my food might take longer to reach me.

But most of all, I love that this is a service that exists and that it’s only going to grow some more, making life easier for everyone. Just as long as they don’t actually introduce drones into the process, I’ll be okay.

Who can you order from?

FoodPanda – Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, this food delivery service is incredibly popular in Asia and has built quite the name for themselves in India.

DineIn – Chennai based, this food delivery service only does deliveries within the city at this point. And they also delivery from grocery stores straight to your home.

Swiggy – Based in Bangalore, Swiggy is all over the country, with the mission to get food from neighborhood restaurants to the urban foodie. If you haven’t heard of them already, you have now.

DeliveryChef – They are a Mumbai based food delivery service that also delivers in Delhi and Gurgaon. They have a specific number of restaurants tied up with them, but they still do the job that you’re too lazy to do.

Zomato – If you didn’t know this yet, Zomato does deliveries too. Some of the restaurants in their directory have tied up with Zomato where you can order directly through their website or app and get the food delivered to you.
