Feeling Sick? Here Are Some Great Foods To Eat To Fight The Winter Bug
Most of the world (India included), is starting to prepare for winter. Some parts of the world have already started setting up for Christmas even! But that doesn’t mean that the changing of the weather will be always smooth. Falling sick is part and parcel of what happens when the weather changes and that’s normal and we’re always prepared for it. But in case you’re still wondering what is good for you at what time, here are a few things that you should definitely make for yourself or your friends and family if they fall sick.
Hot Beverages
It’s not really a big shock that drinking hot beverages when you’ve got a cold is good for you. But what most people don’t realise is that drinking tea – chamomile, ginger, green – soothes the sinuses and also helps calm down an upset stomach. Very often, the two things go hand-in-hand. Add some honey or lemon for a little vitamin C and you’re golden.
Citrus Fruits
Like tea, the citrusy fruits or juices will not suddenly cure you of your cold, but what it will do is definitely boost your system with lots of Vitamin C, which then fights the bacteria and helps you get better faster. So either drink freshly squeezed orange, lemon or grapefruit juice or eat the fruit itself. It’s also very refreshing.
Leafy Green Veggies
Yes, yes, we know, nobody likes eating green leafy vegetables. But, they are filled to the brim with powerful antioxidants that fight off infections of all kind. Get lots of cabbage, broccoli and even kale into your system, it’ll help. Just make sure that whatever you do with the vegetables, you don’t overcook them and take away the essence.
Eggs
When you’re sick with the flu, your stomach isn’t really up for the excitement of food either. And since you can’t stomach the meat and the heavy foods you’d prefer, eggs work best. It provides you with the protein you need and also helps build up your strength. Eggs have zinc, which is found in many cold and flu medicines and that alone makes it a great fix for any kind of ailment.
Yogurt
What your body needs to fight a cold is probiotics and yogurt is teeming with it. Give the healthy bacteria in your body a little push to fight against the bad bacteria and get your health back to normal.
Soups
Movies and television shows tell you that soups solve every problem and they’re not wrong. Whether you’ve got a sore throat, or a bad tummy or just the flu, soups will help ease the pain and fill your stomach. Hot soup eases chest congestion and opens up your sinus passages, which is more than we could ever ask for in a situation like that!
Honey
This age old remedy is one of the best ways to fight a sore throat. You can either have a spoonful of honey or add it to your tea or just a glass of water and it will do its job. Guaranteed.
Popsicles
You know how they let you eat ice cream after you get your wisdom tooth removed? The popsicles work similarly. When your throat is sore, drinking warm liquids is really not a good idea. You need to calm your throat down and a popsicle does that. You can make it at home, even. Keep them simple with fresh fruits and not refined sugar, though.
