Enid Blyton Ginger Beer Recipe

on

Was your childhood as filled with Enid Blyton classics as ours were? From the adventures of The Famous Five to the exploits of the girls at Mallory Towers and St Clare’s to the tales of The Faraway Tree, Enid Blyton’s worlds will always have a place in our hearts. Aside from some truly exciting adventures, another aspect that all Blyton’s works have in common is food. While the girls at boarding school smuggle in bites of pork pie, the Famous Five enjoy a collection of sandwiches as they wander through the British countryside. And, all her characters invariably enjoy ginger beer.

Ginger Beer

Ginger beer is a traditionally non-alcoholic drink that can be traced back to 500 BC when it was used as a medicine and flavouring in Ancient China and India. It became especially popular in England in the mid 18th century and is still a popular drink today – which explains why Blyton’s characters are so taken with it.

Made by fermenting ginger spice with yeast and sugar, ginger beer is naturally carbonated. It’s incredibly refreshing and the perfect way to battle the summer heat. Since summer has already set in, we imagine you have no patience to wait for the yeast to do its stuff. So, here’s how to make a quick ginger beer, adapted from a recipe from Jamie Oliver.

Enjoy this ginger beer with lunch and dinner.
