In the latest too-insane-to-be-true move the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which covers areas in South Delhi like Lajpat Nagar, Greater Kailash, New Friends Colony, and Hauz Khas, has proposed a ban on the display of non-vegetarian foods outside all eateries.

The Big Ban Theory

According to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led civic body’s proposal, display of any kind of “raw and cooked meat” should be banned outside the restaurants. However, the said food can be freely displayed inside the eateries.

Baffling as it is, the proposal was moved by councilors Raj Dutt and further supported by Nandini Sharma, both of whom maintained that meat items on display outside shops could be a hygiene problem, and also “hurt the sentiments of people who are vegetarian”, the Hindustan Times reported.

This suggestion does not come without a fair share of opposition. Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and The Congress have put forth their objection regarding the ban. “If contamination of food is the concern then why keep out vegetarian food and snacks out of this order,” KK Agarwal, President of the Indian Medical Association, pointed out.

Meanwhile, SDMC’s Congress representative, Abhishek Dutt, said “if it’s related to hygiene they should challan those flouting rules. What is the need for bringing in such a blanket ban,” adding that the Congress’ opposition was undermined as the party was outnumbered by BJP leaders in the corporation.

The proposal is still in its infant phase and will only be confirmed (or not) in the next SDMC meeting to be held on January 3, an official said. After its confirmation, it will take two months to lay out the policy as per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.
