Toblerone Changes The Shape Of Chocolate Bars, The World Rages
Known for the famous triangle shaped chocolates, Toblerone has caused quite the outrage among fans in England and slowly all across the world as well.
The maker of Toblerone has reconfigured the unique appearance of the two milk chocolate versions by changing it to narrower triangles and a much larger gap between the peaks. However, the price of the bar has not changed, even if the customer is getting 10% less chocolate.
Mondelez International, which produces the chocolate brand, blamed the rising ingredient prices for this change. According to the company, by adding space between the triangles, the company is able to keep the original packaging and length, but reduce the amount of chocolate. So, the bars that originally weight 170 grams have now been slashed to 150 grams, and 40 grams have been carved out of bars that used to contain 400 grams.
In a statement posted to the brands Facebook page, Mondelez said, “Like many other companies, unfortunately we are experiencing higher costs for many ingredients. We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on shelf, is affordable and retains the iconic shape we all know and love, we have had to reduce the weight of this particular bar.”
The fans weren’t too happy about it, however, and posted about it on Facebook voicing their opinion. “Toblerone is all about the triangle,” Stephen Mason said on Facebook. “Why couldn’t you just lose a triangle at the end or make the triangles smaller?”
Gemma Pryor, the head of external affairs for Britain at Mondelez International said, “We need to make sure it remains on shelves and it’s still affordable. It would be disingenuous to make the link between this and Brexit.”
Theodor Tobler combined his family name with ‘torrone’ – which is Italian for nougat – in 1908 and patented his recipe for chocolate mixed with milk and honey.
