You Can Soon Watch What’s Cooking In Railways Kitchens On Live-Stream
Following the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)’s continuous measures to ensure hygiene and quality in food that is being served within the railway premises, the latest move is to live-stream video footage of the ‘base kitchens’. This step is focused towards monitoring cooks and ensuring that the quality of food is maintained.
Watch It Live
Now, passengers can go to the IRCTC’s official website and watch the live-streaming of everything that’s happening at IRCTC’s base kitchens according to Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and Coal. This initiative. he added, was a part of his drive to improve passenger amenities along with safety. The IRCTC recently installed cameras in its 16 base kitchens, which includes main kitchens such as those in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bhubaneswar. The Railways is also planning to develop an app to allow passengers to keep track of what’s happening in the kitchen while traveling. On an average, the IRCTC serves over 12 lakh meals daily and 10 lakh of those are served on trains alone.
Vision Computing
Apart from this, the kitchens are also equipped with ‘vision computing’, a technology that is capable of detecting inconsistencies in catering services. This technology encompasses a system that generates an automatic report to the contractor if a cook is not wearing his/her uniform. The report would be automatically forwarded to the IRCTC authorities if there was no action taken within a specific time from the submission of the report.
Updated Website
It is to be noted that the IRCTC’s online portal- www.irctc.co.in recently launched a beta version of its new user interface that is aimed to be more user-friendly and offers easier navigation to passengers. The increase in e-ticketing rate to about two-thirds of total reserved tickets called for the website to be updated to make it more accessible according to railway reports. The new website with the new interface is scheduled to roll-out at a later date.
