The Ultimate Guide On Where To Get The Best Food In Colaba, Mumbai
Everyone who ever sets foot in Mumbai needs to visit the Colaba district at least once. Situated at the southern tip of the city, it’s where one can find the heritage Gateway of India and the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Just behind the Gateway is another haunt; Colaba Causeway, filled with hawkers and shops that make it an incredibly popular shopping destination.
Another reason for Colaba’s popularity among Mumbaikars and tourist alike is its plethora of eateries – from the legendary Bademiya kebab stall to the swanky Wasabi at the Taj Hotel, there’re options for every palate and taste. We’ve put together a list of the best places to eat under a variety of categories so that the next time you visit Colaba you’ll leave with bags of shopping, great photos and (most importantly) a full and happy stomach.
Street Food
It goes without saying that you should pay a visit to Bademiya, a legendary street stall of Lonely Planet and CNN Traveller fame. Try its kebabs and rolls. Modern Juice Center, in the lane behind Radio Club serves amazing fresh juices and shawarmas. Just outside the Prince of Wales Museum, a chat stall that serves delicious sev puri and pani puri is another must visit.

Or, visit The Table at Apollo Bhandar for its exquisite global cuisine and its exhaustive wine menu. Another destination for European cuisine is the legendary Indigo, or its delicatessen counterpart, Indigo Deli. Elipsis serves high end American cuisine with a twist, thanks to the innovations of celebrated Chef Kelvin Cheung. If you prefer tastes closer to home, head to Koyla, a rooftop restaurant which serves North Indian bites and offers a view of the Arabian Ocean.

Non-Vegetarian Restaurants
Baghdadi and Bademiya, which we’ve already mentioned are brilliant places for die hard carnivores; while Bademiya serves some mean kebabs, Bagdadi serves mouth-watering biryanis and chicken dishes. You should also add New Martin Hotel, Olympia and Imbiss to your non-vegetarian bucket list in Colaba. New Marin Hotel serves authentic Goan food, Olympia is famous for its biryanis and Imbiss has a menu packed with varieties of meats from sausages to duck to pork to quail prepared Continental style.

Vegetarian Restaurants
Madras Cafe, found on SB Singh Road is a pure vegetarian that serves great dosas and iddlis. Stay away from their Chinese food though. You can also try Kailash Parbhat for street food in a restaurant as well as North Indian snacks.
Just Desserts
Colaba is the home of the original Theobroma and their legendary chocolate brownies. You should also try Theobroma’s banoffee pie, cheesecakes and éclairs; they’re the answer to every sweet tooth’s sugar filled dreams. Le Pain Quotidien at Apollo Bunder also dishes out decadent éclairs, along with a heavenly Belgian chocolate mousse. We also love the desserts available at Leopold Cafe, although they’re a little on the steep side.

Bar Crawl?
If you’re in Colaba in the evening or need a few drinks at noon (hey, we don’t judge!), it has some great bars that you can visit. Gokul, in the Bademiya lane is a favourite because it’s extremely cheap. Meanwhile Cafe Mondegar and Leopold Cafe are both legendary watering holes – Leopold has been featured in Gregory Robert’s ‘Shantaram’ while Mondegar displays doodles from artist Mario Miranda all over its walls. Both are great places for beer. Woodside Inn, opposite Regal Cinema is an upscale bar that serves craft beers from the best breweries in the city.
