Delhi Govt. Sets Up 10 Shelters To Feed The Cash Crunch Stricken Poor
Looks like the Delhi is turning into one gratuitous and giving city. While the Capital’s Bharatiya Janta Party announcing the distribution of laddoos in lieu of the citizens’ support and patience on demonetization, the Aam Aadmi Party is now hosting night shelters to feed the poor and homeless.
Starting Monday, the Delhi Government started giving out free food – also being referred to as langars (common kitchen) – to the needy at 10 night shelters, which are being supervised Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Delhi urban development minister Satyendar Jain launched the initiative at the Dandi Park shelter in North Delhi. The program seeks to provide three meals per day by serving food at the night shelters. “These centres will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner not only for those living in the night shelters but for all poor people living in the vicinity,” a statement by AAP read.
According to Sisodia, the main aim of the initiative is to shield the deprived classes from the severe impact of ongoing demonetization drive, because of which a lot of people end up spending a big chunk of their day lined up in endless bank ATM queues.
“No matter if (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi makes such policies which lead people to the brink of death, but Delhi government will not let that happen. Delhi government will do everything in its power to save people from starvation due to demonetisation,” Sisodia said in a statement.
As mentioned before, the program is being conducted at 10 night shelters spread out across Delhi. The food centers operate near shelters in major poverty stricken areas like Geeta Ghat, Yamuna Pushta, Dandi Park, Jama Masjid, Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin Nila Gumbad, Sarai Phoos, Jhandewalan shelter 1, Kotla Mubarakpur and Fatehpuri near Old Delhi railways station.
