Good Hood Food: The Mumbai Guide – The Best Places To Eat Around Chowpatty Beach

Last week, we took foodies on a virtual food walk through the best places to eat at Nariman Point in Mumbai. If you move towards Marine Drive from there and continue North, you’ll arrive at Chowpatty, a famous beach that needs no introduction.

Opposite Chowpatty stands Wilson College as well as a hostel, making the area a hot spot for teenagers, young adults as well as tourists and locals visiting the beach. Here’s where you must eat when you’re at Chowpatty:

Street Food

The Chowpatty street stalls; a bunch of stalls at the entrance to Chowpatty beach are legendary for their chaat. Try the sev puri or pani puri at any one of the stalls and follow that up with a husk of hot, roasted bhutta.

Opposite the beach stands another legendary eating destination; Bachelorr’s, which serves delicious milkshakes, smoothies and ice creams until one in the morning.

Non-Vegetarian Dining

While most of our guides have a section for vegetarian dining in each area, any foodie would know that Chowpatty is a vegetarian’s paradise; most of the restaurants in the area are pure vegetarian.

However, Cafe By The Beach, which true to its name is a relaxing cafe that is right on the beach serves chicken sandwiches and burgers. Kobe Sizzlers, near Sukh Sagar is famous for its non-vegetarian sizzlers, especially its chicken satellite. Café New York has some tasty non veg appetisers and a jukebox to keep your feet tapping.

Specialty Cuisine

In the Chowpatty area, there are a ton of restaurants that serve vegetarian fare from around the world. Kurries & Burries, with a marriage of Oriental and Mexican fare is one of our favourites; read our review here. New Yorker is popular among vegetarians for its nachos and Mexican fare, while Asian Street Kitchen serves delicious Oriental dishes.

Prefer flavours closer to home? Try Crystal, which is a cheap, hole in the wall joint that serves homey food. Spices & Flavours serves authentic North Indian fare (read our review here) while Thackers is famous for its thalis and view of the sea. Sukh Sagar is a favourite among college students for its cheap, tasty pav bhaji.

Chowpatty is the home of New Kulfi Center, which is renowned across the city for its varieties of cold, creamy kulfi. Bachelorr’s, which we’ve already mentioned has some wonderful ice creams. If you’re a waffle-maniac head to The Belgian Waffle Co for a whole rang of waffle options or stop of at Theobroma for their indulgent brownies, cheesecakes and pies.
