Patrons Can Carry Food Inside Movie Theatres Says Maharashtra Govt

According to a tweet by Asian News International (ANI) yesterday, patrons going for a movie in theatres and multiplexes in Maharashtra can carry in food from outside declared the state government. The action to be taken against the halls not complying with this rule is yet to be decided. The decision has come after a PIL was filed by social activist Jainendra Baxi.

A Relief For Movie Goers

A report by the Times of India says that the government also intends to put a ban on the dual MRP charged by the multiplexes on food and beverages. The Junior Minister for Food and Civil Supplies told the publication that in accordance with the Maharashtra Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1966, the patrons cannot be stopped from bringing outside food into the cinema halls.

However, the cinema owners have denied from any such orders coming in from the government. “We will naturally comply if the government makes it mandatory. So far it is an announcement in the legislature and the entire issue is not clear till the formal orders are issued,” Datar told IANS. “It is true that the prices (of food products) vary, but these must be regulated everywhere, not just for the cinemas. This is a business meant to make profits, but if people cannot afford, they have the option of single-screen cinemas where the rates are much lower.”
