New Study Shows Beer Can Actually Help You Lose Weight


We have a lot of food and drinks that we love. Beer, pizzas, burgers, cheese and the list goes on. But the only one we have deemed appropriate enough to blame a chubby part of our body is beer. Yes, you hasn’t used the excuse, “I don’t want a beer belly” while trying to stay away from beer

Well, you might not have to worry about that anymore. In fact, beer might even have the opposite impact. A new study published in the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics shows that xanthohumol, a flavonoid found in hops and beer, “significantly improved some of the underlying markers of metabolic syndrome in laboratory animals and also reduced weight gain.” 


What does that mean? 

Metabolic syndrome is a mix of obesity, high cholesterol and elevated glucose that are linked to cardiovascular diseases. Basically, you shouldn’t have it. 

In the study, scientists fed lab mice a high-fat diet along with varying levels of xanthohumol. All the mice gained weight while bingeing, but those also consuming xanthohumol gained 22% less weight.


“This is the first time we’ve seen one compound with the potential to address so many health problems,” said Cristobal Miranda, a research assistant professor at OSU and lead author of the study. “After further study, this might provide an effective treatment for metabolic syndrome at a very low cost.”
